Castro Crime & Safety: Shoplifting With Box Cutter, Duboce Triangle Armed Robbery, More14th and Market (Photo: SFMTA)

Crime incidents appear to have remained steady over the last couple of weeks since our last roundup. The neighborhood saw a heavier-than-usual concentration of reported incidents between April 19th-21st, including shoplifting, an armed robbery, and hot prowls (robberies which take place while the victim is home). Later this week, things shift to the safety front, where the SFMTA will hold an open house to discuss ongoing Market Street safety plans. (All crime reports below come via the SFPD, unless otherwise noted.)

Shoplifting Leads To Box Cutter Threat

On April 19th at 10:52am, a man, 35-45, was shoplifting items in a store on 18th Street between Noe and Castro. When a 61-year-old man and 39-year-old woman approached him, he pulled out a box cutter and refused to put back the items. He then fled on foot, stealing bath products, a grooming kit, batteries, and scissors; no arrest was made.

Noe Street Hot Prowl

A trio of reported incidents happened on April 21st, starting at 4am on Noe Street between 20th and 21st. A woman, 33, was sleeping when a neighbor woke her up, informing her that her garage door and car trunk were both open. When she inspected the garage, she found that her mountain bike and computer had been stolen. No arrests were made and the police report lists two male suspects, presumably seen by a security camera or the victim's neighbor.

Liberty Street Hot Prowl

Slightly later on the 21st, around 4:30am, another garage hot prowl occurred on Liberty Street near Sanchez. Three people, a 23-year-old woman, 23-year-old man, and a 24-year-old man, discovered through a neighbor that they were the victims of a burglary. They had left the door to their building's common area open the night before, and then found that their bicycles were stolen by an unknown suspect. No arrest has been made.

Teen Robber With Gun Arrested

The final April 21st report took place at 10:30pm near 14th and Noe. A woman, 29, was approached by a young man, 17, while walking. The man had a pistol, and demanded her belongings. She gave him her purse, wallet, money, and phone, and he fled northbound on Noe towards an awaiting vehicle, but was arrested before he could get away.

21st Street Hot Prowl

Another overnight hot prowl occurred on 21st near Eureka, between April 26th and 27th. A woman, 60, and man, 62, awoke on the 27th to find that their house was burglarized while they slept. An unknown suspect stole a laptop, wireless speaker, house and car keys, checkbooks, a digital scale, and a vehicle. No arrest has been made.

May 5th Street Safety Project Open House

In an ongoing project, upper Market Street, between Octavia and Castro, is seeing continued planning and implementation of safety upgrades. The stretch of street is currently on San Francisco’s Vision Zero High Injury Network for people walking, bicycling and driving.

The SFMTA will have a May 5th open house at 55 Fillmore St. to share information about planned improvements, including sidewalk extensions, protected bike lanes, and potential circulation and parking/loading changes. The open house begins at 5:30pm in the IBEW Local 6 Meeting Hall.
