Event Spotlight: Discover The Artsy Side Of ChinatownLast year's Chinatown Night Out. (Photo: © Chinese Culture Center)

Each week, we'll feature an especially interesting event in the neighborhood based on the event submissions we get, and what we hear about while we're out on the beat. If you want to be considered for next week, please submit your event here.

Chinatown is known for its colorful trinket shops on Grant Avenue and its bustling produce markets along Stockton, but did you know it has a lively arts scene as well?

To highlight the murals and galleries of the community and encourage people to explore beyond the obvious, the Chinese Culture Center (CCC) is partnering with five other spaces for Chinatown Night Out on May 19–20. This is the second year for the event, which attracted about 1,000 participants last spring, according to Abby Chen, curator and artistic director of CCC (750 Kearny, Third Floor, in the Hilton Financial District.)

Jenny Leung, director of communications for CCC, said, "The whole idea of Chinatown Night out is to expose people to a different view of Chinatown.” A map shows the gallery locations and hours they'll be open, along with where to view six murals and two recommendations for local restaurant sponsors: Bow Hon at 850 Grant Ave. and Cathay House at 718 California St. Anqi Li, curatorial fellow for CCC, told us those are staff favorites.

Each of the galleries are hosting exhibits, and CCC has a page with links to details on each of them. The show at 41 Ross features "3650," a work by Sing Tao Daily veteran photojournalist David Huang that follows the story of a Chinese immigrant in an SRO who is chasing his American dream and learning English on his own way.

Chen said while the media often portrays Chinese American immigrants as a homogeneous, poor community, "Very few times we learn about them as individuals." Huang is a unique journalist, she said, who, in addition to covering daily news topics, "has this strong interest in these personal stories. This is one of these cases he’s followed for years." She added that she hopes the exhibit gets attention for presenting "this very personal story for people to get a sense of living conditions and what people's hopes and dreams are."

The other exhibits on May 19th include "Retrieved" at the Chinese Culture Center and "A Place of Her Own" at I-Hotel Manilatown Center, 868 Kearny St. On May 20th, look for  "Liminal Space: Summer Lee" at 41 Ross; "Miso Soup for the Silicon Soul" at Et al., 620 Kearny St.; "World Won't Listen" at Capital, 716 Sacramento St., and "This, That, and Hours in the Sun" at Legion. Check the links for hours and details; the shows will be up beyond this week if you can't make it.
