Event Spotlight: Toy Camera Photo Show At Glass Key This WednesdayPhoto: Nuala Sawyer/Hoodline

We regularly feature an especially interesting event in the neighborhood based on the event submissions we get, and what we hear about while we're out on the beat. If you want to be considered for an event spotlight, please submit your event here.

Lower Haight camera and film shop Glass Key Photo is hosting a new exhibition of local artists' work this coming Wednesday, with a unique twist: all photos will be taken using toy cameras.

Toy cameras are loosely defined as those having plastic, and not glass, lenses. Popular models include Diana cameras, Holgas, and Bioflex (like the one pictured above). By abandoning high quality, the use of toy cameras can allow photographers to be more experimental, playing with light leaks, blurs and other visual distortions.

Glass Key sells a wide variety of cameras, ranging from the much-coveted and expensive Hasselblad to standard 35mm film cameras. For a shop that carries such a wide array of high-level photography equipment, a show that highlights the work of those using cheap plastic cameras might seem an odd fit—but really it shows that anyone can be a photographer, regardless of the tools they use.

The show will feature the work of 11 different artists from the San Francisco Toy Camera Group, with over a dozen works on display. The theme of the show is "childhood," an appropriate topic for those using toy cameras to shoot with.

The show will be up from May 2nd to July 7th, but Glass Key's opening will be held this Wednesday evening, from 7-9pm. Light refreshments will be served.
