The family of Kate Steinle, the 32-year-old San Francisco resident who was fatally shot in July while walking with her father on Pier 14, have filed a federal lawsuit seeking damages.

A press release issued today states that the lawsuit "seeks to hold the Bureau of Land Management, ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement), and former Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi accountable for providing 'the means and opportunity for a repeat drug felon to secure a gun and kill Kate' as stated in the complaint."

Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, an undocumented immigrant who'd been deported several times and also had several felony convictions, was arrested and charged in the shooting, which was committed with a gun stolen from inside a U.S. Bureau of Land Management ranger's vehicle. (Sanchez has pleaded not guilty.)

Following the shooting, the City's sanctuary city policy, which was reaffirmed by the Board of Supervisors this week, came under fire, as did Mirkarimi, who released Sanchez from custody without notifying ICE.
