North Beach Week: Library Anniversary, First Fridays, Burlesque, Mother's Day And MorePhoto: vhines200/Flickr

There's plenty to keep you out and about this weekend around North Beach.

On Saturday, there will be a celebration for the second anniversary of the new North Beach Library (850 Columbus). Beginning at noon, expect free programs and activities, including a silhouette Sunprints workshop for children. There will also be a book reading by Ernie Beyl at 1pm, smoothie-making for children at 2pm and a performance by the FOGG Theatre Youth Conservatory at 3pm.

Of course, the first week of every month brings North Beach's Friday Fridays back into our lives. Their website has all the latest information, but new this month is Sal Garcia's work at the Live Worms Gallery (1345 Grant Ave.), book artist Elizabeth Ashcroft's opening at the Grey City Gallery (250 Columbus), and The Cornelius Cardew Choir at the Canessa Gallery (708 Montgomery St.).

If you're looking for a taste of the Barbary Coast, be sure to check out Bunny Pistol's Barbary Coast Burlesque show at Doc's Lab (124 Columbus) at 8pm on Saturday. The show is a monthly feature at Doc's Lab and for good reason: Pistol was a finalist for the Miss Viva Las Vegas Competition in 2008 and has performed in burlesque festivals all over the world.

Lastly, don't forget to check out the local restaurants listed below in case you want to take Mom somewhere special this Sunday. You knew it was Mother's Day right? If not, you're welcome.

Elsewhere in North Beach news, congratulations are in order for Ken Friedman—who helped relaunch Tosca Cafe (242 Columbus Ave.)—who won Restaurateur of the Year from the James Beard Foundation. Praise is also rolling in for Joe DiMaggio Playground, which was selected as Playground of the Year by the San Francisco Parks Alliance. Lastly, for all the local horse racing fans, Eater SF singles out Comstock Saloon (155 Columbus Ave.) and Tope Lounge (1326 Grant Ave.) as ideal places to watch the Kentucky Derby on Saturday (post time is 3:34pm sharp).
