Once upon a time, the Tenderloin was deemed the "smut capital of the USA."

But today, that past is looking even more distant as word on the street, via the Bay Area Reporter, is that Tea Room Theatre—one of the neighborhood's last porn theaters—is closing its doors for good this Sunday, May 15th.

Since the early 1970s, the tiny all-male entertainment venue at 145 Eddy St. has been the place for locals and tourists alike to view projected porn films and live erotic dancing.

According to an article published in 2014 for LGBTQ Nation, the venue's lease expired in 2015 and they hoped to remain in place for a few more years.

An employee working the box office today didn't know the exact reason behind the closure but suspected it had to do with the rent. For those who will be displaced come Monday, he recommended the Nob Hill Adult Theater, despite its location "way, way up" the hill.

The news of Tea Room Theatre's closure comes as the community is already preparing for the pending loss of The Gangway, the city's oldest gay bar.

We'll let you know as soon as we learn what's in store for the theater's future.
