A Memorial Day beach outing turned dangerous when a 13-year-old girl was knocked down by a sneaker wave at Ocean Beach (near Sloat Boulevard) and then pulled out by a rip current.

Police told KRON4 that the teenager was wading in just a few feet of water when the incident occurred. There was a large shore break, with large waves crashing in a shallow area.

The girl was rescued by SFFD and SFPD around 3pm. The waters were as cold as 52 degrees Fahrenheit, and the girl was taken to the hospital. There's no other word on her condition.

Ocean Beach is a dangerous place for swimmers and even waders. In April, Vallejo teens Wayne Ausa and Grisham Duran drowned there after being swept out by a powerful rip current. If you're going to Ocean Beach, stay safe with our tips for swimmers, surfers, and even dogs
