Scenes From Last Night's Memorial Ride For 2 Cyclists Killed In Hit-And-RunsPhoto: Nuala Sawyer/Hoodline

The mood was somber last night, as hundreds of people gathered with their bikes for a group ride in memory of the two cyclists killed in separate hit-and-runs last Wednesday

The ride, organized by San Francisco Bike Party, saw people gather in the Panhandle at 7pm before biking to 30th Avenue and JFK Drive in Golden Gate Park, where Heather Miller was killed by the driver of a stolen car, who fled the scene and has yet to be apprehended.

Heather Miller, age 41, came to San Francisco from Portsmouth, Virginia, and studied music in college. She loved to travel, enjoyed wine, and was often accompanied by her dog Duncan.

Shortly before 8pm, the cyclists said their goodbyes to Heather Miller, and biked to Seventh and Howard in SoMa, where Kate Slattery was killed by a driver running a red light.

Kate Slattery, age 26, worked as a Project Manager at SolarCity.  "She had a vibrant personality, and her boundless enthusiasm carried her through countless new adventures," read an obituary in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "From traveling abroad, to taking ballet lessons, to rock climbing, camping, biking, and skiing in the great outdoors that she loved so much, Kate made the most of every single day." She is survived by her parents, and two brothers.

A witness to the collision that killed Slattery wrote an emotional and widely shared essay about her experience, here.

The large crowd remained quiet at each memorial site. Many cried as they lit candles or placed flowers near the white "ghost bikes," installed by members of the community as memorials for the fallen cyclists.

The driver who allegedly hit Kate Slattery, Farrukh Mushtaq, pled not guilty to charges of felony vehicular manslaughter, felony hit-and-run and misdemeanor hit-and-run, reports the Examiner. He is due back in court on July 5th.
