On Monday afternoon, District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin, along with supervisors Jane Kim, Eric Mar and Norman Yee, appeared at a press conference at Ping Yuen public housing in Chinatown, to announce the submission of a $3 million line item in the city budget being negotiated for the coming fiscal year to upgrade security at the troubled buildings. Rev. Norman Fong, SFPD Central Station Capt. David Lazar, Police Commissioner Victor Hwang and Chang Jok Lee, founder of the Ping Yuen Resident Improvement Association, also attended.
Ping Yuen has the highest number of incident reports and calls for service of any public housing in the city—including several shootings of late and the recent sexual assault of a 74-year-old woman. When the Chinatown Community Development Center assumes management in August, as we previously reported, it'll need funding for security improvements and upgrades.
