A man drowned in the waters near the Sutro Baths on Saturday afternoon, after falling off a cliff at approximately 4:35pm.

According to ABC7, a witness made an emergency call to report a man falling off a 50-100 foot cliff and into the choppy waters. The man may have hit his head on the rocks as he fell.

Despite immediate attempts at a rescue by the Coast Guard, the National Park Service, the San Francisco Fire Department, and other agencies, the man did not survive the fall. He was found face-down in the water by two members of the National Park Service's Coast Guard.

In a statement to the Chronicle, SFFD spokesman Jonathan Baxter called the rescue "heroic."

“The two put their lives in danger to make sure he had a chance to live,” Baxter told the Chronicle. “They swam without wetsuits, in shorts without shirts, and really did a heroic job.”

The man's companion, a woman, was also rescued from the cliffs. She was not injured and refused medical treatment.
