In April, we reported that Bayview will soon see its first location of Starbucks Coffee, in the plaza at Third and Fairfax streets. The new coffee shop signals a major change in the neighborhood, which has previously struggled to fill retail and restaurant vacancies.

We took a trip to the construction site and caught up with its manager to get more details on what can be expected at this particular location.

“This Starbucks will only have one floor, but will be bigger than most locations," said Jeff Steven of KDC Construction. “I’m not 100 percent on what type of food will be offered here, but I don’t think it will be any different than the usual breakfast and lunch options.”

“One thing I can say is that there will be a lot of seating," Steven told us. "We’ll have some cafe tables and a large table in the center for people to meet, study or charge phones. We’ll also have separate restrooms for men and women, which I think is different from most locations."

Steven says the Starbucks is one of many building projects set to take place at the plaza, though he wasn't sure what else is moving in. "I know there are some new tenants going upstairs. But in time, the whole plaza is going to look much different.”

There’s no question that the restaurant scene is booming in Bayview. Last week, the Chronicle reported that the neighborhood might be the fastest-growing dining district in San Francisco, based on a study of sales tax revenues. Local favorites All Good Pizza and Yvonne’s Southern Sweets were featured as indicators of the neighborhood's changing landscape.

“A few years back, there were a lot of empty warehouses. Now they’re occupied. People got to eat," said Renaldo Guerrero, owner of 15-year-old La Laguna Taqueria. He told the Chronicle that business has been up 20 percent in recent years.

The new Starbucks is likely to open in August. There's no word yet on what employment opportunities will be available, but we'll keep you informed.
