A construction barrier is now rising around the former Market Street Cinema, and workers on site say that demolition of the movie theater turned porn theater turned strip club, located on Market between Sixth and Seventh streets, has officially begun.

Though the theater dates to 1912, the Planning Commission approved the demolition last October, noting that the building had been stripped of all of its defining architectural features during the many redesigns it endured over the decades.

The lot's next act will be a mixed-use residential building, with 90 units (11 affordable) over retail fronting Market and Stevenson. Construction is expected to last 20 months, meaning the new units could hit the market as soon as early 2018.
