There's a few free cultural events rolling your way this weekend around North Beach.
The San Francisco Symphony is returning to Pier 27 (in front of the James R. Herman Cruise Terminal) on Sunday for another free summer concert. Starting at noon, they'll perform Russian music, including Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition, and Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with guest pianist Makoto Ozone. Show up early to grab a seat on the lawn, and bring blankets and/or a picnic to enjoy during the performances. There will be valet bike parking available, too—because this is San Francisco, after all.
Starting tomorrow, the J-POP Summit (now in its seventh year) returns to Fort Mason for a weekend showcase of the latest in Japanese music, fashion, film, art, games, food and subcultures. The Sake Summit will feature samples from over 50 sake manufacturers around the world, while a "fan experience" area includes several notables, including art from Kaori Wakamatsu and performances from the Tokyo Performance Doll group. Tickets start at $25 for adults; admission for kids is free.
In case you want to tidy up for either event, head over to Pier 39 on Friday, starting at 10am, for a free facial hair trimming, courtesy of Wahl Hair Clippers. There will be master barbers (yes, that's a real thing) on hand to trim those beards and mustaches and search for the best scruffy-looking individual to be nominated as the Wahl Man of San Francisco. The winner will get $500 and and a chance to compete for Wahl Man of the Year (yes, that's a real thing too). Even if you don't win, Wahl will donate $1 for every facial hair trim to ZERO, a non-profit leading the fight to end prostate cancer.
