After 45 years, stained glass shop Looking Glass Collage is set to depart its space at 1572 Haight St. 

Steve Wilson, who owns Looking Glass with his wife Gail, will be moving the business into a studio space at 1661 Tennessee St. in the Dogpatch, which will be appointment-only. Wilson plans to keep doing custom stained glass work, and his wife will continue to make jewelry and work on other glass projects.

Wilson told us the departure is voluntary and his relationship with his landlord is amicable, but otherwise declined to elaborate on his decision to move. 

The Wilsons bought the business from a friend in 1971, back when it was called Ye Olde Stained Glass & Curiosity Shoppe. Wilson chose the name "Looking Glass" as an Alice in Wonderland reference.

The Haight Street shop will stay open through October, as Wilson sells down some of his wares. "The less I take with me the better, to make the move easier," he said, noting that he'll launch a 30-40 percent off sale in a few weeks. 

Until then, hours will be spotty, as Wilson will be in and out while the move is in progress. He asks neighbors who miss him when the store is closed to please continue dropping by.
