Less than a year after setting up shop at 506 Castro St., Artís Coffee Roasters is closing its doors in the neighborhood.

"Bummed to see Artis is leaving the Castro," said tipster Shawna, who reports that a goodbye note has appeared on the door of the business, with the following message.

We are saddened to inform you that our last day at this location will be Sunday 8.28. It has been our pleasure serving the Castro community.

Please visit our Hayes Valley location at 537 Octavia St. We would love to see you!

The Berkeley-based coffee roastery opened in the Castro in December of 2015, with a focus on live-roasting small batches of coffee beans to order, as well as grab-and-go coffee and espresso drinks.

The news comes less than a week after Eureka! Cafe also closed its doors. Patrick Batt, one of Eureka's owners, told us that in addition to streetscape construction woes, the plethora of coffee house openings (which Hoodline readers have long observed) affected their decision to close their business.

We've reached out to Artís to learn the specifics behind the closure, and will update this story when we hear back with details.

Update, 3pm: We reached Walter Margerison, director of production over at Artís, who says that the competitive coffee landscape of the Castro did not come into play in the decision to close.

"We're closing because we have two pretty significant expansions happening with our two other stores," he said, referring to Berkeley and Hayes Valley, where an upcoming parklet (in Hayes Valley) and additional outdoor seating expansions (in Berkeley) will be "consuming the bulk of our time, effort and staff."
