Hoodline aims to keep neighbors informed of crime and quality-of-life issues in the neighborhoods we cover. In this Bayview crime recap and others, we won't be covering every on-the-street incident, but we'll do our best to give readers a snapshot of what's been going on.

It's been a little over a month since our last Bayview crime roundup, and August brought still more crimes in the city's southeast. Here's a selection of crimes that took place recently in the Bayview police district, which includes Bayview, Hunters Point, Potrero Hill and the Dogpatch. All details are pulled from the SFPD's daily crime recaps, unless otherwise noted.

Conversation Leads To Assault, Phone Theft

On August 1st around 6pm, two men in their 20s approached an 18-year-old man on the 1200 block of Potrero Ave. where they had a casual conversation. The duo suddenly punched the teenager, stole his cellphone and fled on foot. The victim was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Taxi Driver Attacked With Stun Gun

On August 2nd around 4am, four suspects in their early 20s flagged down a 41-year-old taxi driver for a ride on the corner of Market and Mason. He drove them to the 100 block of Texas Street; upon reaching their destination, they attacked him with a stun gun. The driver fled his own car for safety, and was robbed of his backpack, phone and wallet. 

Fleeing Dirt Biker Pops Ill-Timed Wheelie

On August 4th around 4pm, at the intersection of Third and Yosemite Streets, police approached a 14-year-old boy who was suspected of a robbery (according to Central Station). The suspect was riding a motorized dirt bike, and as he attempted to flee the scene, he popped a “wheelie” in front of the police vehicle, causing a collision. The suspect was arrested on the scene.

5-Year-Old Girl Struck By Stray Bullet

Also on August 11th, a 5-year-old girl was struck by a stray bullet at Hudson Avenue and Whitney Young Circle. The girl was wounded in the hand, and her injuries were not life-threatening. 

Thieves Take Advantage Of Open Door To Steal Toyota Prius

On August 11th around 9am, on the 200 block of Polaris Way, an unidentified suspect entered a home where a 30-year-old man was sleeping. When he woke up, the victim discovered his mother had accidentally left the door open while leaving around 7am, and his money and the Toyota Prius in his garage had been stolen. The car was later found unoccupied at 25th and Rhode Island streets.

BB Gun Robbery

On August 14th around 4:19pm, on the corner of Third and Quesada streets, a 56-year-old man driving a red Cadillac Escalade met up with a 33-year-old man after finding his cellphone and agreeing to return it. Upon meeting the victim, the suspect pointed a BB gun at the suspect’s face and demanded money from him and fled the scene. Officers located the suspect and arrested him.

Carjacking With Simulated Handgun

On August 18th around 12:50pm, on the 1500 block of McKinnon Street, a 56-year-old man was approached by three men in their mid-20s outside his vehicle. One the suspect’s simulated a handgun in his pocket, while another suspect took money out of the victim’s pockets. The victim fled as the suspects entered his vehicle (with the keys still in the ignition) and drove off. The vehicle was later returned to the original location.

Drive-By Camera Theft

On August 20th around 6pm, on the 300 block of Texas Street, a 23-year-old man was standing on the street talking with friends with a man (age unknown) approached him in a Audi Q6 with tinted windows and stole a camera off his shoulder while never exiting his vehicle. The suspect fled in the car.

Man Flees After Approaching 13-Year-Old

On August 24th around 6pm, a 13-year-old boy was standing at the streetcar platform on Third and Oakdale Ave when he was approached by a man in his mid-50s. The man grabbed the boy’s arm and asked him if he wanted to make money, but fled on foot when he saw someone watching.

Property Exchange Turns Into Golf Club, Knife, Hammer Assault

On August 26th around 2:30pm, at the corner of Augusta and Bayshore Blvd, a 41-year-old man had plans to meet up with a 27-year-old woman to get back his personal items from her. She brought along two men in their 40s.

Upon meeting the victim, the female suspect assaulted him with a golf club; the victim pulled out a knife and hammer to defend himself, and one of the two male suspects also pulled out a knife and hammer. They fought each other, but only the victim sustained injuries: a swollen arm and bruised leg. As he fell to the ground, all three suspects fled on foot.

Robbery Victim Assaulted With Chemicals 

On August 27th around 9pm at Oakdale Street and Phelps Avenue, a 31-year-old man was sitting in his car when he was approached by two men in their 20s. The first suspect pulled out a gun and demanded the victim’s wallet, while the other suspect grabbed the victim by his neck and threw an unidentified liquid at him, causing the victim’s face to burn. The victim was treated at a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Hot Prowler Swipes Video Games 

On August 29th around 3pm on the 2100 block of 23rd Street, a 35-year-old man broke the window of a 45-year-old woman while she was home, and stole video games. The suspect fled eastbound on 23rd street in a sedan.

Bayview Station's community meetings are held at the station (201 Williams Ave.) at 6pm on the first Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will be Tuesday, September 6th.
