Dollhouse Bettie, the vintage and vintage-inspired lingerie shop at 1641 Haight, has announced that after 10 years in business, they'll be shutting down their retail store this fall. 

Michelle Metens, the owner, designer, and photographer at Dollhouse Bettie, told us that an ankle injury a few years ago has forced her to reevaluate her priorities.

"The accident was definitely a wake up call for me and my husband Eric," she told us via email. "I somehow managed to continue working after the surgery ... [and] we had a lot of success with our in-house designs, but the stress of the injury, running the store, website, design, manufacturing and wholesale division was driving both of us to the brink of insanity."

At the end of 2014, the couple began simplifying operations, closing their factory and disbanding the wholesale division. They also bought a house in wine country, where they plan to move after the shop closes.

Dollhouse Bettie is the third longtime Upper Haight merchant to close in the past year. Carlos Lopez, the cobbler who operated Haight Street Shoe Repair at 1614 Haight for over 30 years, retired last December. A month Kids Only at 1608 Haight closed its doors, also after 30 years in business. 

Metens doesn't have a definite closure date for Dollhouse Bettie. She her lease has some flexibility, and she's hoping to liquidate the bulk of the store before shuttering for good. "We're hoping to be out by the end of September, but might stay through the end of October," she said. In the meantime, merchandise is 20-70 percent off.

After the store closes, fans will still be able to purchase Dollhouse Bettie's wares through their website. "I'll continue to offer authentic vintage, up-cycled vintage and custom made-to-order lingerie through the website," Metens assured us.
