Event Spotlight: 'Chroma' Color Theory Art Show At Rare DeviceChroma, as installed at Gallery CA in Baltimore. (Photo via artist Lisa Solomon.)

We'll regularly feature an especially interesting event in the neighborhood based on the event submissions we get, and what we hear about while we're out on the beat. If you want to be considered, go ahead and submit your event here.

It's officially August, and that means fog in the city and sunshine-seekers heading out of town. But there's still plenty to do around Divis this week.

Headlining this week's events is an especially colorful art opening at Rare Device. Entitled Chroma, the show features the work of Lisa Solomon and Christine Buckton Tillman, who explore color theory and found objects in their new show, opening Aug. 5th.

From Rare Device's event description:

The artists invited the public to mail in random, colored stuff no larger than a playing card. Submissions came from all over the U.S. and as far as Belgium and the U.K. From this vast collection of arbitrary and otherwise disposable items, the artists sorted the “junk.” Chroma is the culmination of arranging and compiling these materials into an orderly, chromatically-compelling piece, with the intent of elevating the viewer’s relationship with the mundane debris that we interact with on a daily basis.

To learn more, check out artist Lisa Congdon's in-depth interview with the artists behind Chroma here, and swing by the shop on Friday to check out the show in person.

Also on tap this week are plenty of opportunities to get down at Madrone, including a night of forró dance (just in time to get you in the mood for the Rio Olympics, which begin Friday) and the monthly Prince vs. Michael Jackson dance party at Madrone on Saturday night.

If you're feeling crafty, don't forget about Workshop SF on McAllister. This week, they're hosting crafting classes featuring sewing, soy candles, succulents, woodwork, hair braiding and leatherwork. For ladies looking to draw with other comics-loving women, check out Ladies Night on Wednesday at Comix Experience—it's BYON (bring your own notebook).

The Independent's weekend shows are already sold out. But if you're looking ahead to next week, take note that the podcast Throwing Shade will be recording live on stage on Monday night, and Janeane Garofalo is coming to town to do stand-up Aug. 13-14th, so snag your tickets now.
