Outside Lands 2016: A Survival Guide For Area ResidentsDigital Detox at Outside Lands. (Photo: David Lytle/Flickr)

With over 210,000 people expected to descend on Golden Gate Park once again this weekend for the Outside Lands Music Festival, residents of the Outer Sunset have learned to survive the onslaught. For some, it's even become an opportunity.

Here's our guide for residents on what to expect for this year's musical extravaganza, from dealing with event issues and towing mis-parked cars to the closures to expect in Golden Gate Park.

Community Hotline

As was the case last year, Outside Lands is offering a hotline for local residents at (415) 965-8001 to "[mitigate] the impact of the event in your neighborhood." The hotline will be staffed from 10am to 11pm on each of the festival days.

Parking

Although the festival encourages attendees to use public transportation (Muni, BART, Caltrain), their bikes (there's a bike valet) or their own two feet, expect parking to be in short supply in the neighborhood during the weekend.

To mitigate parking issues, SF Rec and Park has created signs for residents that warn festival-goers to not block driveways. They can be picked up at the front desk of McLaren Lodge (501 Stanyan St.)

If you have a blocked driveway related to the festival, there will be two tow trucks and a parking control officer on both sides of Golden Gate Park dedicated to parking issues. If you need a car towed away, call SFMTA at (415) 553-1237 or (415) 553-1200.

At least one Sunset-area school is taking advantage of the crowds. As one of the closest schools to Outside Lands (it's near the festival's south entrance), Lawton Alternative School will host a parking fundraiser from Friday, August 5th to Sunday, August 7th between 10am-11pm for $40 per day. Cash or major credit cards will be accepted. To reserve a spot, contact the school at (415) 742-2573.

Getting Around

The SFMTA is expanding service this weekend for both the N-Judah and the 5/5R lines during peak festival times. However, expect big crowds on both the light rail and the buses, which include the lines going to Golden Gate Park (7, 7R, 28, 28R, 29, 44).

For residents, consider biking or walking around the neighborhood yourself this weekend to avoid the congestion.
