On Wednesday, September 21st, the San Francisco Film Society will launch season three of the award-winning Amazon TV series, Transparent, at the Castro Theatre. Last night, lead actor Jeffrey Tambor won his second Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a comedy series, and Jill Soloway won another Emmy for Outstanding Directing, adding to her numerous honors for the show since its first season.

For those of you who haven’t yet seen Transparent, written by Jill Soloway, the series is about the Pfeffermans, a Jewish family whose lives become transformed when patriarch Mort Pfefferman (Jeffrey Tambor) comes out as transgender, eventually taking the name "Maura." Transparent’s Facebook page describes the TV show as “a darkly comedic story about an LA family with serious boundary issues. In this exploration of sex, memory, gender and legacy, the past and future unravel when a dramatic admission causes everyone's secrets to spill out.”

Last night, during his acceptance speech, Tambor said that he would like to be the last cisgender actor in a trans role. He said, "Please give transgender talent a chance. Give them auditions. Give them their story. Do that. And, also, I would not be unhappy where I the last cisgender male playing a female transgender on television. We have work to do."

While the series is primarily set in Los Angeles, Noah Cowan, Executive Director of the San Francisco Film Society, told us that the film society is honored to kick off the new season in the Castro, “to what will surely be a rapturous Bay Area audience celebrating our shared values with these amazing creators and cast, and what better place to do it than the glorious Castro Theatre."

Cowan calls Transparent “an incredibly entertaining and perfectly conceived series that makes an outsized impact on the social evolution of our country." He said, "Transparent has provided us with that special kind of cultural moment that only comes along once in a generation.”

The event at the Castro Theatre includes a “special sneak preview” of Transparent’s third season, including a screening of the first two episodes of season three before it's released for streaming on Amazon on September 23rd

Wednesday’s event is expected to include cast members Jay Duplass and Trace Lysette and writer Our Lady J, and announcements for additional guests are forthcoming. Tickets for the event, $25 each, are still available and can be found here
