Haight Street's Big Slice Pizza Closes For OverhaulPhoto: Camden Avery/Hoodline

One of the mainstays of low-key dining on Haight Street, Big Slice Pizza (1535 Haight), is currently out of commission for a cosmetic overhaul.

If you frequent Haight between Clayton and Ashbury, you might have noticed the closure, which has been ongoing for the past couple of weeks. There's a construction dumpster parked in front of the shop, with permitting for street occupation through the end of October, and crews have been inside working on construction.

While we haven't been able to get in touch with Big Slice's owner, Mahmut Yuksel, city records and permits indicate that the work doesn't entail a change of ownership or use, meaning we can still expect some incarnation of Big Slice to open its doors at the beginning of next month.

We'll let you know when Big Slice is back in business, and with what improvements. According to city permit records, Big Slice's retail space hasn't undergone a major overhaul since 1999.

Meanwhile, you can still find other slices on the street — like at Escape From New York, which just celebrated its 30th anniversary
