The SFPD briefly shut down Market Street from Mason to Fifth streets to investigate a stabbing this afternoon.

According to witnesses at the scene, a fight broke out on Mason, then escalated on Market near Fifth Street, with one person being stabbed and sent to the hospital.

The victim has been transferred to the hospital, the suspect was arrested, and the SFPD has re-opened Market Street to traffic. The identities of both suspect and victim remain unknown.

An anonymous witness noted that the driver of the white truck parked on Market attempted to break up the fight.

We'll share more details on this incident if and when they're released.

Update, 11:42am, 10/26: The SFPD has confirmed that the incident began on the 900 block of Market Street, between Fifth and Sixth, where a 49-year-old man was waiting for a bus. The suspect, a 35-year-old man, approached and asked if he had a knife. The victim said he did and handed it to him. The suspect then started stabbing the victim multiple times with the knife.

In an effort to get away from the suspect, the victim ran into the street and jumped into an SFMTA truck. The city worker driving the truck then tackled the suspect and detained him until police arrived and took him into custody.

The victim suffered non-life threatening injuries.
