Tenderloin residents have a ton of new business openings to look forward to in the next few months, with restaurants The Brim and Hitachino Beer & Wagyu, bar Rum & Sugar, and restaurant-spa Onsen slated to open in the next few months. Another business joining the growing list is Mister Hyde, a new hair salon that's taking over Hyde Away Blues BBQ's former address at 457 Hyde St.

Glenn Gustafik, a Bay Area native, is the new salon's owner, educator and stylist. With 27 years of experience in both the Bay Area and Seattle, he knew he was finally ready to open up a salon of his own.

He struggled to find a spot he could afford, but after looking at several different locations throughout the city—including a 400-square-foot room for more than $10,000 per month—he landed on this empty storefront in the heart of the Tenderloin.

Gustafik wants his salon to be "modern and classic, but with a mystical 1800s feel." The building is currently painted plain white, but Gustafik plans on hanging a neon light above his door, so people can see his sign at all times of day.

The second floor, which will be converted into a waiting area and drink station.

The first floor will have five salon chairs in total, as well as a reception table and a small waiting area. The second floor will be transformed into a second waiting area, where customers can sip beer, wine and soft drinks while they wait.

Along with offering haircuts and coloring, Gustafik wants to use his space as a classroom, with stylists from different salons coming in to learn from each other. He plans on teaching a few sessions, but hopes that eventually, other stylists will take the reins and lead classes on their own.

Mister Hyde will softly open sometime in mid-November, with a grand opening before the end of the month. In the period between, he'll offer half-off haircuts.

Prices will be tiered across junior and senior stylists, regardless of the customer's gender; a junior stylist begins at $50 and a senior stylist can go as high as $125 for a haircut and $85 for coloring.

Tentative hours for Mister Hyde are 9am-7pm, Monday-Saturday and 10am-6pm on Sundays.
