JJ Ice Cream To Close
After Elysa H., Michael Y. and Deborah K. asked us to look into a sign in the window at JJ Ice Cream (1152 Irving), we spoke to the owner, Steve Hsieh. For more than a decade, he's served the neighborhood with novelty toys, sandwiches and snacks, but he's now retiring, due to illness.
"Every year, I supplied free ice cream to graduating eighth graders from four local middle schools," he said. "That's how a lot of people know me." The store will stay open through October 24th, and possibly until the end of the month, said Hsieh.
JJ Ice Cream's vast inventory of novelty toys and collectibles are now 50 percent off, as part of a "customer appreciation sale." Food and snacks are still the same price, but as ever, every sandwich order comes with a free soda. JJ is open from 10:30am to 7:30pm.
Gordon Properties Makes a Move
Real estate office Gordon Properties has moved several blocks east to 560 Irving, at the corner of 7th Avenue. The company also maintains an office in Sausalito.
Tai Chi Jianbing Pops Up at Nabe
Jianbing, the savory crepe enjoyed millions of times each day on the streets of China, has now popped up in the Inner Sunset. Back in June, we profiled Tai Chi Jianbing and its owner, Cheng Hu, who's now preparing jianbing to order during lunch at Nabe (1325 9th Ave.)
Each jianbing is "made with local, organic, fresh and high quality ingredients, always," said Hu, who prepares them every day from 9am to 2:30pm, and offers a variety of different fillings.
Hu said he plans to expand the pop-up to Nabe's new Lombard Street location when it opens, and he's signing a lease on his own spot in Cupertino, directly adjacent to the new Apple headquarters that's under construction.
Mexican Grill Temporarily Closes
Mexican Grill, the pequeña taquería that operates behind the counter at Tart To Tart (641 Irving St.) is temporarily closed while its operator takes a vacation. According to a bakery representative, the mini-restaurant should be abierto again in approximately two weeks.
Taco Bell/KFC Closure Remains a Mystery
After two anonymous tipsters inquired about the recent closure of the Taco Bell/KFC at 1900 Irving St., we looked into the matter. Although the site now appears to be closed for construction, we weren't able to find any recent building permits or notices from the Department of Health. When more information is available, we'll post an update.
