It's only been four days since the official closure of the Lower Haight's Lo-Cost Meat & Fish Market, but the 30+ year business at the corner of Haight and Fillmore is already being gutted, as these photos, sent by tipster Charles, indicate.

Co-owner Pierre Pegeron told us earlier this week that he had to close the market because his longtime landlord, Robert Shelton, raised the rent to two and a half times what he currently pays. Shelton was also involved in the eviction and ultimate departure of another of his retail tenants, neighborhood-favorite taqueria Cuco's, in October 2014.

"We can't afford to stay here anymore," said Pegeron, who is known in the neighborhood for his door-to-door efforts to evacuate people during the catastrophic 2011 fire across the street from Lo-Cost.

"[A] greedy landlord shuts down yet another 20+ year local Lower Haight business," Charles writes. "I fucking hate this son of a bitch and his greedy-ass practices. The problem with rental prices in this city isn't tech workers, it's the shitty, greedy landlords. It's about time we have some form of rent control for older commercial rentals as well."

"With all the small businesses coming and going, this is gutting the neighborhood," Charles says. "I really hate what has been happening to this neighborhood. I'm afraid that Cafe International is next."
