Earlier this month, the Haight Ashbury Seniors—a group organized over the summer by longtime Haight resident Cosi Fabian—quietly kicked off its first round of programming in the neighborhood: yoga classes aimed specifically at seniors.

From now through the end of the year, free classes will be held every Monday at 10am at the Waller Center (formerly the Hamilton Church), at 1350 Waller St. (One exception: Because of Thanksgiving next week, a special Friday session will be held this Friday, November 18th—there will be no session on the 21st.)

Held in the music room behind the church's sanctuary, the classes are suitable for both people with full mobility and for those who prefer to do their yoga from a chair, said Booksmith owner Christin Evans, who has been helping to organize the series. (Full disclosure: This writer is a Booksmith employee.)

"Based on the success or lack of interest," Evans said, "we'll continue after the end of the year." There may also be a fee for classes if they continue in the new year, but that's yet to be determined.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a mat. For those without a mat, one can be provided if a request is submitted ahead of time to Evans at christin [at] booksmith [dot] com.
