The sixth annual Bay Area Science Festival Discovery Day will take place at AT&T Park this Saturday from 10am-4pm. Sponsored by Chevron and organized by the Science & Health Education Partnership (SEP) at UCSF, the free event for kids and families aims to inspire a new generation of scientists, engineers and technologists.

In an effort to connect underrepresented communities to the festival, the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) and civil engineering firm Brown & Caldwell are providing free bus rides for residents of the city's southeast neighborhoods, which will depart from several Bayview schools at 9:15am. Rides back to Bayview will depart from AT&T Park at 2pm.

“Providing buses to Discovery Day not only supports Bayview Middle School’s STEM curriculum, but addresses the underrepresentation of the Bayview community at events in San Francisco," said Jessie Buendia, the community manager for SFPUC. “We partner with the communities that we serve, and want to make sure that it’s beneficial for them."

At Discovery Day, over 150 interactive, hands-on exhibitions, games and educational activities, facilitated by an array of professionals in the STEM field, will activate the park. Here are some highlights:

  • Chevron’s STEM Zone, an interactive exhibit that allows visitors of all ages to see how STEM is connected to everyday life, with nonprofits like TechBridge and Project Lead the Way leading some of the hands-on activities.

  • SEP and UCSF exhibits, which give youth an opportunity to join scientists and doctors and learn about the inner workings of the eye and brain, touch a human heart, see how to stabilize a spine fracture, see how a vein illuminator shows the inside of a body, and learn the difference between medicine and candy, based on appearance.

  • An exhibit from Facebook, StreetCode Academy and the Boys & Girls Club of San Francisco, encouraging students to pursue STEM education through two experiences that will explore the power of virtual reality and molecular bonding. They'll have “Inner Scientist” mini-room for students to gather for photos to celebrate Discovery Day.

  • Robots of all shapes and sizes at Willie Mays Plaza, for a hands-on exhibit sponsored by the Bosh Family Foundation and Silicon Valley Robotics.
