Last October we learned that the iconic Fisherman's Wharf Irish pub Fiddler's Green at 1333 Columbus Ave. would be shutting its doors, much to the dismay of tourists and locals alike. But all is not lost. New owners have taken over, made some improvements to the space and menu, and are ready to celebrate the grand re-opening this Saturday.
The building's landlord, Alex Kam Ho Lau and Vince Lau, who hold a share in the business, have partnered with a new set of Irish owners to revamp the pub and bring it up to ADA compliance while still maintaining the nostalgic feel that customers are accustomed to.
But that doesn't mean some major changes haven't been made. Lau says the space has been completely gutted, brought down to the studs in the walls, and the horseshoe bar has been replaced with a more traditional bar to make the space feel more open. Reclaimed wood has been used to give it a rustic feel, and a brand new penny-covered flooring has been installed throughout.
A second bar has been added upstairs and there is a mezzanine level with elevated seating, which Lau says gives visitors the feeling that they are "actually at the game" when viewing the many large televisions positioned throughout the bar.
Colm Dougherty, another Fiddler's partner who also operates a Bay Area construction firm that specializes in bar and restaurant build-outs, explains that the pub is now divided into three distinct spaces. "The ground floor provides a unique, nostalgic Irish pub feel...the back mezzanine provides a unique sports viewing experience...[and] the top floor bar provides a spacious and private bar area perfect for large groups."
All three spaces can be rented, together or separately, he noted.
The revamped pub offers an array of Irish- and San Francisco-inspired dishes courtesy of executive chef Jamie Harrington. "The heart of the menu" is pork and beef cured onsite, Harrington said.
The new menu also features the Fiddler's Cheddar Burger, with housemade patties, and a traditional Irish breakfast served with a San Francisco twist—inside a Boudin sourdough bread bowl.
Live music will be a staple at the pub, with traditional Irish music as well as local DJs spinning. "Andyes, by popular demand, Sabbath Canon is back!" Lau said. After playing at Fiddler's over the past 20 years, one of the musician's first shows in the renovated bar is tonight.
Saturday's grand re-opening celebration begins at 7:30pm, and will include Guinness and Jameson drink specials, live Irish music and dance, and giveaways. And District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin will cut the ceremonial ribbing.
With Fiddler's open now, hours are 11:30am-midnight Mondays through Thursdays and 11:30am-2am Fridays and Saturdays a. Happy hour specials are offered from 5-8pm weekdays.
