There's been a spate of arboreal news in and around the eastern gates of Golden Gate Park this fall, largely in the form of multiple downed trees.

If you've passed through the Page St. entrance to Golden Gate Park in the last week, you may have noticed the sudden absence of a group of ornamental plum trees that were on the path between Page and Kezar Drive.

An anonymous tipster noted the removal earlier this week, saying that the trees appeared undamaged and healthy.

Joey Kahn, spokesperson for San Francisco Rec & Parks, said that the removal was planned. "As part of general maintenance," he wrote in an email, "we removed three small plum trees that were dying."

The stumps have since been removed and the area re-seeded with grass.

Are more changes on the way?

Kahn said nothing much else is on the slate for the immediate future. "We'll be doing some general cleanup of the roots as well as some mulching," he wrote, "but we won't be making any significant changes at this point because ... we've recently begun a community process to make improvements to the Stanyan Street edge of Golden Gate Park."
