Castro Crime & Safety: Death In The Muni Tunnel, Hot Prowls, More

Plenty of heavy rain seems to have kept Castro crime news to a minimum, at least compared to our last roundup. This time around, we saw a pair of hot prowls, an assault, and a fatality inside the Castro's Muni station.

All reports are in chronological order and come from the SFPD's daily crime recaps, unless otherwise noted.

Sanchez Hot Prowl

Sometime on the night January 9-10, a 33-year-old woman and 41-year-old man had their belongings stolen in a hot prowl—a burglary which takes place while residents are inside their home. An unknown suspect entered their residence near Sanchez and 14th, most likely through a rear window, and stole a wallet, money, laptop, and a bicycle. No arrest has been made.

Man Killed In Muni Tunnel

We reported on a January 11th death that occurred between the Castro and Church Muni stations, delaying service for some time. While the SFPD report hasn't provided in-depth details, a witness said he saw the victim exit a Muni train into Castro station, then reach the top half of his body through the window of the Muni car in an attempt to take transfer tickets. The train began moving, and the victim's lower body crashed into a metal security gate. The witness stated that the victim held on for seconds longer before rolling out of the window.

While the SFPD confirmed that officers responded to the scene at 3:05pm, the witness claimed to have reported this incident to authorities at 11:25am. There is no current explanation of the reported discrepancy between the incident and response.

3 Suspects Assault Man Following Argument

On January 16th at 1:52am, three individuals exited a vehicle near 20th and Church and began an argument with a 28-year-old man. The suspects then hit the man, causing non-life threatening injuries, before getting back into their vehicle and fleeing. The victim was transported to the hospital, and no arrests were made.

Dolores Hot Prowl

Sometime on the night of January 18-19, a hot prowl occurred near Dolores and 21st. The victim, a 55-year-old man, believes he left his keys in the front door; an unknown suspect entered, stealing a laptop, jackets, backpack, and headphones before fleeing in the victim's vehicle. The victim awoke to an open front door and missing car; no arrest has been made.
