HS Student Crowdfunding Africa Trip To Visit 'Original Homeland'Photo: GoFundMe

Albert Mitchell is determined to go to Africa — but he needs some help.

The 11th grader from McClymonds High School is turning to GoFundMe to help finance the journey, which will allow him to experience what he calls his "original homeland."

"When I was younger, I was told that the continent was full of suffering and instabilities and African people needed all the help that they could get," he told Hoodline. "Now that I know a lot more about its culture, I am very interested in going to Africa myself to interact and connect with my roots."

The trip, which would take place from March 28 to April 10, is being offered by Mitchell's after-school program, operated by Alternatives in Action (AIA), an Oakland-based nonprofit that prepares youth for college and career success.

Funds raised will mostly go towards covering the cost of Mitchell's round-trip flight to Johannesburg, he said.

A few of his classmates have already visited South Africa and had positive experiences. "I feel that it is best to go with someone who has already been there before so that they can share the best parts of the experience with me," he added.

Mitchell hopes the trip will provide him with a life-changing experience that can positively impact his future.  "I'm interested in life stories and historical information that I can carry with me for the rest of my life," he said.

Launched on January 30, the GoFundMe campaign has raised $1,420 of the total $3,500 goal, including a donation from a backer who affirmed Mitchell's desire for making the trip.

"Just returned from South Africa," the donor wrote. "Your life will be enriched in so many ways."
