The Inner Sunset's central location makes it an ideal point of departure, but we found plenty activities within walking distance this weekend — although the N-Judah is definitely convenient for carrying purchases home.

2017 San Francisco Scholastic Chess Championship, 11am

This morning, the 2017 San Francisco Scholastic Chess Championship takes place at the County Fair Building at 9th Ave. and Lincoln Way.

The free tournament, which gathers kids from kindergarten to 12th grade, is organized by Nick de Firmian, a chess Grandmaster and 3-time national champion who's also the outreach manager for the Mechanics' Institute's chess room.

The event brings together “the brightest minds from around San Francisco,” he said. Students from Lowell High School "recently finished first in the state championship, so we're quite proud of them," de Firmian added. Today, about 250 kids will play against each other in a series of matches.

There will also be several side events, “like a blindfolded Grandmaster playing several games at once. We also have one young champion from Stanford who will play 40 people,” said de Firmian.

The main event starts at 11am, and matches will continue until 3; at 3:15, awards will be presented to this year’s winners.
