For those of you already anticipating your vernal outfits for the reopening day of Alamo Square Park, we've got some bad news.
We reported back in January that Rec and Park was on track to reopen the park in "late winter to early spring," and when we checked in a couple of weeks ago, that was still the plan. But it turns out that the Great Rain Deluge of '17 has moved the goalposts.
“We have had 27 days of heavy rain, not just sprinkling,” Rec and Park spokeswoman Connie Chan told the Chronicle. “We want to do the work, but we can’t. This is the first time we have seen anything like this winter rain.”
In Alamo Square, the wet weather prevented shrubs, sod, and spring flowers from being planted, and the new pathways and restroom also need some finishing touches.
Hopefully, the wait won't be too much longer. On Rec and Park's website, project manager Brett Desmarais says the park is now estimated to reopen by mid-April.
But for now, you'll have to take the rosé, the dog, and the blanket and head over to Duboce Park—if it's not too soggy.
CORRECTION: Project Brett Desmarais is planning to make an announcement by Mid-April regarding the reopening date of the park.
Thanks to Nigel M. for the tip.
