You know the feeling: Racing out of the ball to catch a ride and leaving your glass slipper behind; going out for groceries but deciding to buy some magic beans instead; or heading off the grid to visit Nana’s cabin and getting delayed by a hungry wolf.

Magic and reality mix at every turn in the acclaimed Fiasco Theater production of James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award-winning play Into the Woods at the SHN Golden Gate Theatre, playing now through April 2nd.

Bring your imagination and celebrate life’s great adventures with a cast of cherished fairy tale characters as they each search for the one thing they believe will make their lives complete — only to find out that there are very serious consequences to be dealt with in the real world. Set against the backdrop of a mysterious storybook forest, rendered onstage as a thicket of ropes and dismantled pianos, Fiasco’s production brings Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and the Beanstalk), and others to life in a fresh and engaging performance.

“I think one of the reasons that audiences will connect to the show,” Ben Steinfeld, one of Fiasco’s artistic directors, explained, “is because all of us have had moments where our understanding of our lives has been completely reframed.” As the Fiasco team describes their work, every element has been carefully considered to bring the story front and center, from minimal set dressing to the acoustic spin on Sondheim’s score, performed entirely by the cast onstage and with acoustic instruments.

“We’ve created a production that has 11 people onstage working together to play music, sing songs, and do storytelling,” Steinfeld explains. “That’s our way of saying that social responsibility is also a value in our artistic process. The audience feels they’re absolutely a part of what is happening. They’re with us moment by moment, being surprised and delighted by the production, as we are.”
