Grocery Outlet is now open in the six-year vacant DeLano’s grocery store at 1245 South Van Ness Avenue, near 24th Street. The grocer hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning and plans to throw a grand opening celebration this Saturday.

As Mission Local recently reported, Grocery Outlet first expressed interest in the space back in August of 2015, reportedly beating out other interested parties like Fresh & Easy and housing developers.

For the past two years, the grocery store’s opening has been delayed by community meetings, the permitting process and construction, the latter of which cost over $5 million.

The Mission’s newest grocery store will be owned and operated by Eric Liittschwager, who has run Visitacion Valley’s Grocery Outlet for the past two and a half years. The Mission District store will be the fourth Grocery Outlet store in San Francisco and will employ roughly 45 people, many of them being students and mothers, Liittschwager has said.

Saturday's grand-opening celebration is scheduled for 11am-2pm.
