After nearly ten years at 1234 9th Ave. in Inner Sunset, retail shop Paragraph is closing its doors. Its last day of regular hours will be this Sunday, July 23rd.
"Due to my husband’s job re-location, we are moving to Texas," wrote owner Vanessa Viray-Carlos in an email that was sent to customers. "We will miss the love and support of our customers [and] the special, ever-changing Inner Sunset neighborhood."
The family-owned boutique features wares crafted by local and independent designers. Many products have a Bay Area or San Francisco twist and feature local iconography, including the Golden Gate Bridge or the Warriors' color palette.
Paragraph has long had a loyal following among residents and was named SF Weekly's "Best Neighborhood Boutique" in 2015.
In her email, Viray-Carlos also thanked her "lovely" landlady, saying that she "made us feel welcome and was very understanding of this unpredictable retail climate."
The boutique first started in Glen Park in 2004, and was a family affair that involved Viray-Carlos, her mother, brother, and sister. Before the family moved Paragraph to the Inner Sunset in 2007, they lived in the Chenery Street building that housed the shop.
“We’ve always wanted to have a family business,” she told Hoodline in 2015. “I think it stems from coming from a family of entrepreneurs."
In the meantime, Paragraph will be marking down many items. Because Viray-Carlos and her family are moving, they will also be offering "gently-used clothing, furniture, fixtures and a few odds and ends for sale."
Paragraph (1234 9th Ave.) is open from 12–7 Tuesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays.
