Last night, an unidentified man died of stab wounds near the corner of Lily and Octavia Streets in Hayes Valley.
According to SFPD spokesman Officer Michael Andraychak, officers responded to a report of someone in need of assistance at 7:09pm. When units arrived at the scene, a man was found lying on the sidewalk.
Paramedics responded, but the victim was declared deceased.
By 8:46pm, officers were still investigating the crime scene, according to a Hoodline tipster:
I live on Lily in between Gough and Octavia. Our entire block is blocked off by the police right now and the police are standing over what appears to be a body covered by a yellow tarp. I don't know what happened, although a neighbor said she heard someone got stabbed.
Police are asking anyone with information regarding this investigation to call the SFPD Tip Line at 415-575-4444 or Text a Tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD. Callers may remain anonymous.
[Update: 10:17am] Another Hayes Valley tipline user contacted us, claiming that they are the individual who called 911 to report someone in distress:
So last night I was walking down Octavia ... at 7 and I walked past this little alley, Lily St. I saw a man wearing blue jeans and a black t-shirt lying face down not moving much in the middle of the alley with a lighter next to him.
A suitcase with a bunch belongings strewn everywhere was lying open maybe 20 feet from him near me. I saw a lot of needles on that block the night before last and people do a lot of crack/smack in this neighborhood, so I called 911, assuming he’d probably OD’d and needed some medical help.
They took my story down and I came back along the same route to find like a dozen or so cops and the entire alley and block of octavia was blocked off with police tape everywhere. I talked to an officer who asked me if i’d seen anyone leaving the scene or if i had seen him walking around beforehand.
Basically, I called in a murder thinking it was an OD.
