'Hella Halal' Brings Gyros, Late-Night Hours To SoMaPhoto: Hella Halal/Yelp

A new halal and Mediterranean spot has opened its doors in the neighborhood. The newcomer to SoMa, called Hella Halal, is a semi-permanent pop-up at 320 11th St. (between Folsom St & Harrison St), inside Garage Cafe.

Hella Halal got its start at the the SF Underground Market in 2012, and evolved to highlight Mediterranean fusion fare that embraces East Coast-style flavors. It debuted a location at 1629 Broadway in Oakland in January, but is on hiatus there due to permitting issues with the building.

The SoMa location officially opened in mid-August, with a menu featuring beef gyro or chicken gyro tacos, wraps and platters, with a signature "Shriratta Sauce" (made from a sriracha base inspired with middle eastern seasonings to give it a hot/tangy flavoring) and "Thizziki Sauce" (made from a greek yogurt base mixed with fresh locally grown cucumbers, lemons, mint, and secret seasonings.) (See the full menu here.)

There's just one review on Yelp thus far, which gives it five stars, noting its 3am closing time on Fridays and Saturdays—which should come in handy for the area's many bar- and club-goers.

Christopher G., who was the first Yelper to review the new spot on August 22nd, said: "The food here is so delicious! It's the perfect place to get food after the club or even before the club since its surrounded by a lot of them. The food is fresh, delicious, and has a kick!"

Intrigued? Stop in to try it for yourself. Hella Halal is open Monday–Thursday from 11:30am–10pm, Friday from 11:30am–3am, and Saturday from 4pm–3am. (It's closed on Sunday.)
