If dogs truly are man's best friend, they're expensive companions. Between the vet bills, the food and the rent, owning a dog is a pricey commitment.

That's right—in SoMa, it costs more to rent a dog-friendly one-bedroom apartment than to rent a place that is strictly pet-free. According to data provided by Zumper, a rental listings website, renting a canine-friendly apartment in SoMa will cost you $75 more than the median monthly rental price.

We discovered that for studio and one-bedroom listings in SoMa, the median rent is $3,800; but, for apartments that allow dogs, that median price increases to $3,875.

If you (and your furry friend) are on the lookout for a dog-friendly rental in SoMa (or if you're the proud owner of a dog and want to get a sense of what people are paying in the neighborhood), take a look at these listings:

140 South Van Ness Ave.

When it comes the dog-friendly deal of the day in SoMa, 140 South Van Ness Ave. is the cheapest listing on Zumper that says "yes" to canines. The one-bedroom apartment is currently listed at $2,800 per month, which is $1,075 less than the median price for one-bedroom rentals in SoMa.

In addition to permitting pets, the townhouse has one-and-a-half bathrooms, a full-size refrigerator, electric stove top, built in microwave and full size oven. It also has 24-hour access to a fitness center and an in-unit washer and dryer. According to the listing agent, there's a small private deck, and whereas the lower floor boasts hardwood floors, the upstairs loft-style bedroom is carpeted.

201 Harrison St.

Another moderately priced dog-friendly rental in the neighborhood is the 600-square foot one-bedroom apartment at 201 Harrison St., which is listed at $2,995—$880 less than the median price for one-bedroom pooch-friendly rentals in SoMa.

The furnished one-bedroom apartment has one bathroom and comes equipped with hardwood floors, in-unit laundry, a walk-in closet and a dishwasher, and the building has a swimming pool, jacuzzi, garage parking and a fitness center.

18 Lansing St.

On the pricier side of dog-friendly rentals in SoMa is 18 Lansing St. The 1,178-square foot one-bedroom, one-and-a-half bathroom top floor apartment is listed at $3,950—$75 more than the median price of other apartments that permit pets in the neighborhood.

Besides allowing renters to have dogs, it has a mezzanine level master suite, in-unit laundry, garage parking and a chef's kitchen, complete with granite counter tops. It also has a spiral staircase.

According to the listing agent, the apartment has "dramatically high ceilings and windows," a skylight and partial city views, and the building's hallways feature wood beams and brick from its original 1928 construction.
