As catastrophic flooding continues in southeastern Texas and Louisiana, Bay Area businesses are stepping up to help people who've been affected by Hurricane and Tropical Storm Harvey.
SoMa's Chronicle Books will hold a bake sale on Friday where customers can purchase sweet and savory baked goods, along with gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan products.
Proceeds will go towards the Texas Gulf American Red Cross and the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund to help provide shelter, supplies, and first aid.
Hayes Valley's cat cafe KitTea is inviting feline fans to "help raise money and awareness for Hurricane Harvey." Half of the café's Labor Day proceeds will go directly to Austin Pets Alive.
Another Hayes Valley store is also offering help. True Sake (560 Hayes St.) alerted us that customers who come to the store and donate to the Red Cross with their phone will get a free can of sake.
On September 5th and 6th, two dinner-related events will take place. Tacos will come to Lower Haight's Wing Wings, while WesBurger N' More in the Mission invites patrons to a Texas-style brisket feed. Online tickets have sold out, but a few more will be available at the door.
In the East Bay, the Oakland As will donate $1 from every ticket sold for the Houston Astros series between September 8th and 10th. Proceeds from the weekend’s raffles will also benefit the American Red Cross.
Local nonprofit founder Meghan Freebeck has also created a fundraiser to ship hygiene and menstrual products to various shelters in the Houston area.
"In 2016, we sent over 2,000 menstrual hygiene products to Louisiana after the floods," the nonprofit noted.
Bay Area residents who wish to help Harvey victims can also donate directly to charities, without falling for a scam.
