Here's a recap of notable crimes committed in the Tenderloin district in the two weeks since our last report. Unless otherwise noted, all details come from SFPD daily summaries. 

Tenderloin Station to get new captain

After more than two years serving the neighborhood, Teresa Ewins has been promoted from Captain to Commander of Muni Task Force.

"Chief William Scott will be announcing my replacement soon," she wrote in a message posted to Twitter.

Elderly man attacked, robbed from behind

At 8am on September 27th, an 83-year-old man was walking near the intersection of Leavenworth Street and Golden Gate Avenue when two men—said to be in their 20s—grabbed him from behind. One of the suspects went through the victim’s pockets, and the two fled on foot with the man’s cash.

Man robbed while entering home

A 32-year-old man was entering his home on the 300 block of Ellis Street (near Taylor) around 6:13pm on September 24th. A man and a woman, both said to be around 34 years old, approached him and demanded that he hand over his belongings.

The suspects fled the scene with the man’s money and have not been identified. 

Man stabbed during three-on-one bike robbery 

Three men of unknown age ran up to a 36-year-old man on his bicycle near the 100 block of Turk Street (near Taylor) around 3:50pm on September 24th. The suspects knocked the victim from his bike, before assaulting and stabbing him. The three then stole the victim’s bike and fled west on Turk Street. 

Man robbed by three 20-somethings

Around 1:30am on September 24th, a 31-year-old man was walking near the intersection of Turk and Taylor streets. One man, said to be 20 years old, approached him and told him to hand over his bag.

Two other men, also said to be around 20, surrounded the victim and stole his backpack, including his passport and other documents. The suspects fled on foot and have not been identified. 

Robber arrested after bystander tackles him

Two women, one 34 and the other 35, were standing on the sidewalk near the intersection of 8th and Market streets around 4:55pm on September 23rd when a 64-year-old man old approached them, pulled out a knife and demanded money.

The younger woman was frightened and threw money at the suspect. A bystander who witnessed the incident tackled the suspect, and police arrived at the scene and arrested him. 

Argument escalates to stabbing, arrest

Just before 8:30am on September 21st, two women, one 43 and one 54, were arguing on the 400 block of Turk Street (near Hyde). The older woman hit the younger woman from behind.

The younger woman then picked up a crate and hit the older one, before the older woman pulled out a razor blade and started stabbing the victim. Police arrested the older woman. 

Woman attacked while holding daughter’s hand

A 22-year-old woman was standing on the corner of Market and Taylor streets, holding her daughter’s hand and waiting to cross the street around 9:26pm on September 20th.

A man approached the woman and punched her, caused her to fall to the ground, and continued assaulting her, causing injury. The woman was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. No arrest has been made.

Woman robbed, punched after allowing man to use cellphone

Around 11:18pm on September 20th, near the intersection of Hyde and Grove streets, a 26-year-old woman allowed a man to use her phone to make a call. A second man approached and ripped the victim’s cellphone from her hand.

The woman tried to fight back, but the suspect pushed her to the ground and fled in an unknown direction. The victim also tried to detain the first man, but he punched her. A witness contacted the police, who arrested the suspect who used her phone.

Man on bicycle steals cellphone

A man riding a bicycle approached a 36-year-old woman near the intersection of 5th and Market streets around 9:35am on September 20th and started fighting with her over her phone.

The man stole the device, fled on the bike, and has not been identified. 

Man slapped and robbed after exiting liquor store

Around 3:06pm on September 17th, a 38-year-old man exited a liquor store near the intersection of Turk and Leavenworth streets. Another man slapped him and stole money from his wallet. The suspect has not been identified. 

Man assaulted, robbed after conversing with trio

A 32-year-old man stopped to talk to two men and one woman, all said to be in their 20s, around 3:45am near the intersection of Geary and Leavenworth streets on September 17th. The three suspects attacked the man with their fists, and stole his wallet while he was on the ground.
