Hosting vacationers, or a visitor to San Francisco yourself?

With its close proximity to downtown and some of the city’s most coveted tourist destinations, shopping scenes and dining options, SoMa is a desirable home base for those looking to explore the city.

Read on for where to stay if you're making the trip.

Inn on Folsom

Some of SoMa’s cheapest hotel accommodations are at the Inn on Folsom, located on Folsom Street, between 7th and 8th. Ideal for backpackers and travelers on a tight budget, the Inn on Folsom’s 25 rooms offer the bare necessities, and breakfast and Wi-Fi are free. If you're flying into SFO, hotel staff will even pick you up from the airport.

The inn is a 20-minute walk from the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, an 18-minute walk to the Westfield San Francisco Centre and a 15-minute walk to City Hall. Rooms are available from $99 a night.

Bay Bridge Inn

Another reasonably priced hotel in SoMa is the Bay Bridge Inn, which is located on Harrison Street, between 5th and 6th. In addition to free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and cable TV, guests have access to free parking — a real blessing in parking-challenged San Francisco. The two-story Bay Bridge Inn has 22 guestrooms, and standard rooms begin at $119 a night.

Carriage Inn

If you’d prefer to stay slightly closer to Market Street, consider the 48-room Carriage Inn, located on 7th and Minna. A stay at the Carriage Inn comes with parking, air conditioning and free continental breakfast and Wi-Fi.

Located near the heart of downtown, the hotel is less than a 10-minute walk from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco and the Orpheum Theater, not to mention countless other cultural, shopping and dining destinations. Prices range from $139 per night and up.

Hotel VIA

If you’re looking to treat yourself during your stay in San Francisco, check into Hotel VIA. Located on King Street, across the street from AT&T Park, the Giants' home base, the 159-room hotel is just steps away from the Caltrain station and Muni stops, and about a 20-minute walk to the city’s iconic Ferry Building.

Hotel VIA has all of the basics, like free Wi-Fi and premium TV channels, and also boasts two bar/lounges, a rooftop terrace, a fitness center, valet parking and views of the Bay. Rooms are available from $209 a night.

The St. Regis San Francisco

If money is no object, SoMa boasts one of San Francisco's most high-end hotels: the St. Regis. Located on 3rd Street, next to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and across the street from the Yerba Buena Gardens, it's a short walk to Union Square and the Powell BART/Muni station.

Besides a restaurant, a full-service spa, an indoor pool, valet parking and a terrace, the 260-room hotel has a health club and a business center that are both open 24 hours a day. But the pampering comes with a price tag: guests at The St. Regis can expect to pay upwards of $475 a night.
