A police officer assigned to the Castro district for Halloween was shot shortly after midnight this morning. According to SFPD, a 41-year-old male officer and an adult male suspect were both wounded, but the extent of their injuries is unknown.

The shooting occurred at approximately 12:03am after two officers were approached by a citizen who reported a suspicious vehicle near 18th and Diamond streets. When police approached the car, “there was an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and at least one officer,” police reported.

The officer and the suspect were both hospitalized.

On social media, people near the scene reported hearing multiple, rapid gunshots. On Twitter, @jasonford1 posted a video that apparently captured audio of the shooting, while another witness said the exchange sounded “like fireworks.”

After the shooting, personnel from the District Attorney’s office, the Department of Police Accountability, Internal Affairs and the Homicide Detail shut down the area from Market to 19th Street and Castro Street to Eureka Street to investigate.

Anyone who has information about this incident is encouraged to contact SFPD via the department's anonymous tip line at 415-575-4444, or text TIP411 with "SFPD" at the start of the message.
