Whistle, a 200-square foot fashion and home goods furnisher at 1311 16th Ave. (between Irving and Judah), is rallying for a cause this retail season.
Founder Katie Gaertner opened the shop four years ago "to showcase makers from all over the globe," but now the store is putting "makers from this country first," said Annie Johnston, a spokesperson.
As a result, the store has kicked off its America We're Open campaign, a two-month effort that promotes domestic crafts and goods with an eye towards mending "our country’s current fragmentation."
By featuring independently made products from different parts of the country, the range of offerings is meant to remind customers that they're part of a broader social fabric.
"Cities like San Francisco exist in coastal bubbles," Johnston said. "We lose touch with the sentiment of smaller towns and cities." Whistle plans to introduce the products and their creators to locals and retailers via ten weekly events, she added.
Open weekly on Fridays from 11am-6pm and weekends 11am-5pm, Whistle is offering extended holiday hours, and will be open daily 11am-7pm from December 18 through December 23rd. Shop hours on Christmas Eve are 11am-4pm.
