As SF Weekly reports, one of the announcements in Mayor London Breed's first Board of Supervisors meeting was the city's $15.5 million purchase of 730 Stanyan St., currently the site of a McDonald's restaurant.

The deal, first floated late this summer and agreed upon in its broader strokes by September, hadn't yet come with a price tag.

According to SF Weekly, Breed said the purchase price is below the property's market value, describing it as an "incredibly favorable deal."

For years, the site has been a nexus for crime and quality of life infractions; in 2015, City Attorney Dennis Hererra sent a letter to the restaurant's corporate headquarters and its then-franchisee informing them that they could be held accountable for "narcotics trafficking" and "other public nuisance conditions" at the location.

Though the city has held its first public meeting for the project, neighbors will have a series of opportunities to share their input.

According to early documents released in the course of the city's environmental review, two build-out options (both of which could develop the entire block, including its large parking lot) come down to either a 5- or 7-story building.

But what the site will ultimately look like will be the source of a long string of reviews, design options, and possibly, appeals.

As proposed, the city intends to develop the parcel with 100 percent affordable housing. Under legislation Breed helped pass in 2015, a portion of the units in the new property will be set aside for District 5 residents who have been previously displaced.
