If you're ready to chow down on some Asian fusion fare, a new spot has you covered. Located at 4901 Telegraph Ave. (between 51st St. & 49th St.) in Temescal, the fresh arrival is called Hawking Bird.
We've been covering the restaurant's developments for several months, and Hoodline tipster extraordinaire Al M. recently reported that after the building received a fresh, new coat of yellow paint, a remaining license to operate needed to be obtained.
Now that everything is in order, the long-anticipated Lao eatery from the former owner of Hawker Fare James Syhabout is up and running, serving his classic khao mun gai (K.M.G.) chicken and rice dish, along with noodles, salads, sides, and more.
The K.M.G. is poached chicken served over rice cooked in chicken broth, with cucumbers, cilantro and ginger with fermented soybean paste on the side. You can also order it "dirty" by adding chicken livers.
There's also the "Hawking Bird," a chicken thigh filet marinated in ginger and garlic, then battered and double-fried; and the "Mocking Bird" tofu sandwich with a curry batter and twice-fried as well.
Look for extras like fried tater tots laced with "secret seasoning," garlic noodles with fried shallots and scallions, tum-style spicy pickled veggies, and chicken fat rice. There's also an option to "add a fried egg to anything." (You can check out the full menu here.)
With a 3.5-star rating out of two reviews on Yelp so far, the fresh addition is earning solid feedback from clientele.
Illyanna M., who was among the first Yelpers to review the new spot on December 8th, said: "A great spot for a quick and casual bite, bringing the chicken and rice craze to the East Bay."
Yelper Sherry T. added: “I miss Blackwater Station, but this is a welcome addition to Telegraph, where I would love to see more fast-casual trendy spots. I ordered the chicken and rice dish with chicken liver."
Interested? Stop by to welcome the new business to the neighborhood. Hawking Bird is open Friday and Saturday from 11:30am–2:30pm, and Sunday from 11:30am–5pm. (It's closed on Monday–Thursday.)
