This month, the San Francisco Symphony performs Candide, an operetta composed by Leonard Bernstein (West Side Story, On The Town) that's based on Voltaire's satirical 1759 novella.

Candide premiered on Broadway in 1956 and earned five Tony nominations, including one for Best Musical. The story follows the misadventures of the sheltered, lovestruck Candide as he tries to maintain his optimistic nature—and pursue romance—in the face of hardship.

Before each performance, Bernstein’s daughter and son, Nina Bernstein Simmons and Alexander Bernstein, will share insights into their father's work in "Bernstein On Bernstein," a free talk for ticket holders.

SFS performs Candide at Davies Symphony Hall from Thursday, January 18th to Sunday, January 21st. Floor seats start at $49.
