Grenade Found During Cole Valley Garbage PickupPhoto: Google

Normally placid Cole Valley was visited by SFPD tactical officers and the department's bomb squad this morning after a Recology worker discovered a grenade in a routine trash pickup, the Chronicle reported.

From 10:15 to 11:30am, members of the police and fire departments were deployed near the corner of 17th and Shrader streets, and residents were advised to stay indoors and away from windows.

No further information has been released by police about the nature of the device, or if it was armed.

Despite its bucolic reputation, this isn't Cole Valley's only brush with a grenade. Nearly two years ago to the day, a landscaper working at Carl and Cole also uncovered a specimen.  Similar discoveries have been made in Potrero, the Castro, and the Tenderloin over the last twelve months.

As always: if you see a suspicious device, call 911 immediately.
