Mel's Drive-In diner on Van Ness Avenue has closed, according to our network of tipsters. A sign posted to the door thanks customers for "years of support."
It's not the end of the eatery at that location, however; multiple sources have told Hoodline that the space is being renovated so it can reopen under a new Mel's concept that includes a full bar.
Public records indicate that permits were pulled on December 12th, 2017 to make interior alterations, including the addition of a "small bar, restroom and finishes."
Another permit application filed on January 29th indicates plans to multiple illuminated signs on the building's exterior, including a 12-foot blade sign with push-through letters.
An unnamed employee at Mel's Lombard Street location confirmed that the restaurant will indeed become a new concept with a small bar. Although we couldn't find an active liquor license for the location, the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control has recommended approval for a Type 47 license, which permits beer, wine and spirits.
Our source said the the Marriott hotel chain had acquired the space and is behind the plans to meld the 1950s California-styled eatery into a new concept. "It will be still be Mel's, but something different," they said.
We reached out to the Opal San Francisco hotel, where Mel's is located on the ground floor. An employee who wished to remain anonymous confirmed the renovations and new direction. While the hotel is currently independently owned, they said a sale to the Marriott group is imminent.
Founders Mel Weiss and Harold Dobbs opened the original Mel's Drive-In at 140 South Van Ness Avenue in 1947, later leveraging California's high rate of car ownership to expand to locations across Northern California.
The Van Ness spot is the chain's third San Francisco outpost, according to its website.
