Topping the list is Hofbrauhaus Pittsburgh. Located at 2705 S. Water St. on the South Side, the German bar is the highest-rated brewery in Pittsburgh, boasting four stars out of 616 reviews on Yelp. According to its website, Hofbrauhaus beer "is brewed using original recipes handed down by the Duke of Bavaria, over 400 years ago."

Try the Original Lager, a traditional German lager that's been representing Hofbrauhaus since 1589. The brewery, with several locations across the U.S., also offers German fare like potato pancakes, grilled bratwurst with mashed potatoes and schnitzel topped with Black Forest ham, Swiss and homemade beer cheese.

There's always something new at Roundabout, which changes its tap selection every few weeks. Recent offerings include the Intersection 2018 (blended ale conditioned with brettanomyces) and Pot Hat Cider Late Harvest made with juice sourced locally from Brown's Orchard.

3. East End Brewing Co.

The beer spot, which also has a taproom in the Strip District, brews more than 35 beers each year including year-round staples, seasonal brews and barrel-aged selections.

Look for East End's flagship beer: the Big Hop American Ale. Made with Centennial and Cascade hops, this popular ale is brewed to balance bitterness with a solid Munich malt backbone.
